DUST is a young adult graphic novel series about a neo-medieval Dust Knight trying to bring justice to a post-apocalyptic future Earth, scorched into a strange and chaotic desert wasteland teeming with scoundrels. Although the desert is a grim setting, the art and wry storytelling are not: DUST reads like a madcap mix of “Asterix” and the Hugo Award-winning novel “A Canticle for Leibowitz.”

The Story

Set in the post-apocalyptic future of Earth, scorched into a chaotic desert by an unprecedented solar shift, society is transformed into a ravenous hellscape of pirates, scavengers, and monstrous creatures. Centuries after this calamity, mankind enters an age of allegiance, assembled into various factions of their own morals and beliefs.

The modern-age medieval kingdom of Helianthus flourishes during an era of peace and prosperity, protected from the dangers of the outside world. However, this peace is interrupted when an appalling event befalls within the walls of the kingdom. The Dust Knights of the sovereign King Leopoldo are sent to uncover the truth behind the death of one of their own comrades, felled by an unknown killer.

Venturing off into the treacherous and vile remains of a once gorgeous planet, the dust knights must uncover the secrets that lead them closer to the one responsible for their comrade’s defeat. To protect their kingdom and avenge their brother, they will endure the worst.

Dust Knights brandishes unique talents and special attributes that

earn them their position as the bravest warriors in their nation.

The Dust Knights

Hugo Malick, The Noble

The most loyal advisor to the Helian monarch, Hugo is a shining example of dedication and honesty. Raised in a small fishing village, he was orphaned at thirteen years old after his parents were killed during a raid that destroyed his home. King Leopoldo discovered him in the ruins of his house and brought him to be raised in Helianthus by nursemaids. The tragedy of his childhood fueled his unwavering devotion to duty and his training to become a Dust Knight at the age of 25. Now, he brandishes his father’s sword, the only heirloom to his past, and brings compassion and respect to those who deserve it. He is known for his gracious manners and stoic bravery, however his blind obedience to the throne may prove to be a double-edged sword.

Isaac Rivera, The Astute

The decision-making, rule-enforcing leader of the Dust Knights. He is patient, collected, and sensible, elected as the first Dust Knight for his outstanding abilities as both a soldier and a leader. He is responsible for distributing all duties to the other Dust Knights and reporting back to King Leopoldo regularly. When in combat, he easily outsmarts his opponents, and always provides feedback, often unsolicited, on how the other knights can better their abilities. He lives alone in his meticulously spotless abode, spending his days reading in privacy and appreciating his isolation.

Gayle Ashby, The Nimble

The newest addition to the Dust Knight legion, Gayle is a tech-savvy boy genius with prowess in robotics and engineering, but with the social skills of a preteen. He was brought on as a Dust Knight for his cunning knowledge and quick-thinking. As the youngest of the Dust Knights, he is often picked on for his scrawny build, stuttering voice, or clumsiness, but he is still a valued member of his team.

Alec Lionel, The Proud

Slightly too cocky for his own good, Alec is an honorable representation of a Helian soldier. He possesses extensive knowledge about battle strategies and combat techniques, which makes him a valuable ally in a fight. However, his pride often gets the best of him, leading him to fight for personal glory and selfish intentions. He sees himself as the hero, and while he encourages the best appearance and attitude in his fellow Dust Knights, they do not take kindly to his pompous attitude. He will brag and take the credit for any impressive feat he can, whether it be a tall tale or the exaggerated truth, but when his ego is shattered, he always has his fellow knights for a shoulder to cry on.

Raleigh Ontario, The Mighty

A tall, extremely muscular brute weighing over 400 pounds, Raleigh is easily the strongest man in Helianthus. He was elected as a Dust Knight for his overwhelming strength and durability, often sent to defend weaker civilizations from monsters or bandits. However, while his strength is beyond comprehension, his cognitive skills are lacking. He speaks very few words, but is always good for cracking a joke. It is a mystery where he came from or why he possesses such an abnormally strong build, but when fighting beside him, one shall never lose.

Julius Reid, The Charming

What he lacks in common sense, he makes up for in charismatic enchantment. He is a handsome, slender soldier, who steals the attention of all in his vicinity. He is fluent in a wide variety of languages, collected from his gleaning across the dunes of Prometheus, making him an excellent negotiator for neighboring cities. Julius is a compelling storyteller, a musical prodigy, and all too good at pilfering money from the unaware. His charming nature is often used as a lure for him to collect the wallets of those distracted.

Fred Marlowe, The Inebriated

Whether it be abroad on assignment, or at the Helian taphouse, Frederick always has a pint of ale at his disposal. As implied by his unique title, there is not a moment when he is sober. He was unexpectedly brought in as a Dust Knight for his determination and toughness, able to take a punch and slug one back just as easily. He wields a mighty battle ax from one of his victories at the taverns, and he has surprisingly good aim when he is under the influence.

Cyrus Crow, The Silent

Little to nothing is known about the elusive Cyrus Crow, only that he used to be the most famed assassin of Doom, a city of thugs and murderers. No one has ever heard him speak, no one knows where lives, and no one has seen his face, always overshadowed by a ragged hood. All communication is presented through gestures or notes, of which there are very few as well. As a Dust Knight, his duties often involve investigating targets of interest or sneaking around neighboring nations in order to acquire information. He brandishes two small daggers, and often uses the shadows to his advantage. A shadowy stranger, Cyrus is a valued member of the Dust Knights, but a poorly-understood one as well.

Reyes Elroy, The Dexterous

His survival skills and knowledge about Promethean flora and fauna make him one of the greatest explorers in Helian history. Reyes finds immense satisfaction in the discovery of new species and uncharted lands beyond the walls of the kingdom. When he is not mapping the surrounding nations for the King, he is diving headfirst into the unknown, undiscovered and unflattering beyond. While his confidence and thirst for adventure make him a reliable companion, his addiction to exploring often gets him and his companions into rough situations. With each journey, whether successful or near-fatal, Reyes records everything he knows within leather journals and publishes them for all to peruse.
